Can You Ever Really Be a Lash Master? Not If You’re Making These Mistakes…

You've mastered the basics, navigated through the initial hurdles, and now you're a pro in the lash extension world – so used to the repetition ofpick, isolate, and place that you could probably apply a set of classic lashes in your sleep. Congratulations! Even seasoned Lash Technicians can stumble upon challenges though, and the more experience you gain, the more likely you are to start wanting to cut corners. In this post, we’re going to delve into the top 5 mistakes that we see advanced Lash Techs making so that you can avoid them, and truly become a master of your craft!

Mistake 1: Not Learning New Skills

Once you’re trained and working on clients, you don’t need to take any more courses or learn anything new, right? WRONG! While we appreciate that some Lash Technicians prefer to carve out a niche for themselves in the lash world, you do still need to make sure your skills and knowledge are up to date.

It can be as simple as learning a new lash mapping style, or making sure your knowledge of lash extension glue is up to date if you’re not ready to take a new course to learn a new technique.

Mistake 2: Using a One-Size-Fits-All Approach for Every Client

There’s a good reason that there are four base lash mapping styles that you can build on to create trending lash mapping styles, and that’s that there is no one-size-fits-all lash style (well, there is, kind of). There’s also a good reason that so many different types of eyelash extensions are available – no two clients are the same, so no lash set should be either.

While the lash mapping style that you pick for each client largely depends on their face shape and eye shape, it also comes down to their personality, their job, and what they ultimately want from their lash extensions.

Mistake 3: Neglecting Client Education

Never assume a client knows how to maintain their lash extensions. This goes more for clients who are coming to you for the first time, either from another Lash Technician or for their very first lash set. The fact of the matter is that to this day, there’s a lot of misinformation about how to look after eyelash extensions, such as not being able to get them wet, which opens our clients up to the possibility of health issues like blepharitis.

Each and every client should be educated on proper lash extensions care, and it doesn’t hurt to remind long-time clients that they should be washing their lashes every day either.

Mistake 4: Undervaluing Networking and Community Engagement

Networking with other Lash Technicians isn’t just about building relationships. It’s also a really great way to stay informed about industry trends, stay up-to-date with the latest updates to what’s considered best practice, and get a bit of inspiration from time to time.

You don’t have to go to events like lash conferences to network, but it’s a good way to engage with your peers in a way that adds value to your career as well. If you just want to test the waters and build some connections virtually before taking the leap into live events, forums, and Facebook groups can be a brilliant place to get to know other Lash Technicians.

Mistake 5: Letting Marketing and Business Skills Lag

Businesses don’t grow by chance – even if you’re fully booked all the time, you should be keeping your social media and/or website up to date with photos and reels of your lash sets at the very least.

Being an experienced Lash Technician doesn’t always mean you’re at the top of your game. There’s always something new to learn and a skill to polish. Take time to look into and practice new techniques that you haven’t tried before, or brush up on something you haven’t done in a while – your business and your clients will thank you for it!
